Jonathan Rubens leads his firm’s transactions team, focusing on lower-middle market M&A, and he advises entrepreneurs and investors in early-stage companies. Jon speaks on preparing companies for exit, and for over 15 has led a course on representing early-¬stage companies and leading them through financing.
Jon will chair the ABA Business Law Section in 2027. He started his career representing media businesses, and he interned at the French small business administration, studying lending and early--stage financing trends. He is a graduate of Dartmouth College and UCLA Law.

Katie Gardner is a Vice President and Director of the Institute for Trust and Estate Planning at Bernstein Private Wealth Management, sitting in the San Francisco Office. Before joining Bernstein in 2024, Katie was an estate planning associate at Coblentz Patch Duffy & Bass LLP and at Loeb & Loeb LLP, where she focused on sophisticated tax and estate planning techniques for high-net-worth families. Prior to developing an expertise in estate planning, Katie spent two years practicing employee benefits and tax law at Hanson Bridgett LLP. Katie earned her BA in developmental psychology from Stanford University, where she received the J.E. Wallace Sterling Award for Scholastic Achievement. Katie earned her JD from Stanford Law School, where she contributed to the Stanford Law & Policy Review journal and volunteered for the Stanford Tax Pro Bono Project.

Chad is a tax managing director at Moss Adams LLP and has worked in public accounting since 2001. He specializes in the tax implications of M&A transactions, including tax diligence, tax modeling, and tax structuring on the applicable federal income tax issues. Chad also has a deep technical knowledge and is a subject matter specialist in corporate tax matters including section 382 net operating losses, qualified small business stock, determination of earnings and profit and stock basis, application of the consolidated federal income tax rules, cancellation of debt issues, and worthless stock deductions.
