XPX Dallas- Trust and Estate Planning for Family-Owned Businesses: The Nuances of Building Short-Term and Multi-Generational Wealth (Case Study)
We've covered these topics before, and we've even got into the weeds as we've explored in detail short and long-term strategies for effective trust and estate planning. But we haven't focused exclusively on family-owned businesses and the myriad of dynamics at play. When you think about it, here are some of the relationships that come to mind:
1. One of the owners, let's say a wife and granddaughter, who owns 100%. Her husband is not an owner but has influence.
2. She has three children, two from her first husband, who passed away, and one with her new husband after she got remarried.
3. Two of her kids are married, each with two children, and the youngest is in high school.
4. The wife's Mom works as the company's CFO.
5. Her brother is co-owner but has worked less and less in the business, with a strong-willed wife who controls him and feels that he should own more of the company. Money drives both of them.
6. And more.
In this meeting, we'll explore family dynamics and how family member's ownership, their generation, their relationship with money, their ideas on what to do with the company, and more affect decisions to create trusts, build long-term, multi-generational estate plans and more impact the business and relationships amongst the family members.
Look forward to seeing you there, and please invite someone to join us!
