I thought this might be useful to fellow XPX members who work with families navigating leadership and ownership transitions.
The article introduces the idea of “parallel readiness”: rising-generation family members become more ready to step forward as they gain real responsibility, while senior-generation leaders become more ready to step back as they see judgment and capability developing in practice.
I look at several ways families can support that process, including giving rising leaders meaningful opportunities to make decisions, reflecting together on how those decisions were made, and making readiness something both generations help cultivate rather than something one generation simply evaluates in the other.
I’d be interested in how others in the XPX community help families build confidence on both sides of a transition before the formal handoff occurs.
