Purpose vs Staying Busy after the Sale

Share:

Interests + skills + perspective + heartbreaks = purpose ===> health

I left academic leadership and clinical practice to get in front of the people I saw selling their business/retiring then rapidly declining – for PREVENTABLE reasons!

As a clinician, I thought the reasons were health related – diet, exercise, stress management, skipping doctor visits and screenings, etc.

Do you want to know what was the real reason, or at least the other key missing element?  PURPOSE!

Those declining were either living to keep busy or had completely lost their sense of self and relevance after they were no longer in their business leadership role.

Each of us has a purpose, something that uniquely drives us to get involved and do something meaningful – at each phase of life.

Purpose benefits others then ricochets back to huge personal benefit and fulfillment.

Those who find and then live with purpose have bigger social networks because they

  • are spending time with others who share their interests,
  • eat better because they are less often throwing a microwave dinner on the table alone,
  • move their body more,
  • have lower stress, and
  • are less self-focused.

It is these things that drive the health.

Staying busy is all about yourself.  Purpose is all about using your unique gifts to do something to make a real difference for others.  And that is what makes your life have great meaning and leaves a lasting legacy.

If your clients are not even thinking about life after the sale, please encourage them to use one of the many XPX advisors that will help them uncover purpose before they needlessly decline.  Please reach out if I can provide that assistance through my proprietary process that has helped so many transitioning leaders.
